The Frame Game is one of the great marketing hoaxes played on unassuming consumers.  Use some common sense. If you were a bed frame manufacturer, would you give away your products for free? Of course not!. Dealers pay for bed frames and costs are factored into bed set pricing.

According to a top level executive of one of the area’s largest discount bedding chains, "the system of free frames is set up to encourage the sale of upgrades, not the free giveaway. For example, the Q241G (their flimsy, promotional queen size bed frame with glides, not even the tiny wheels that tear up your carpet) is meant to be unsatisfactory to the customer. You are (the sales force is) to use this frame in order to convince the customer to purchase the upgraded frame." That discount bedding chain offers two levels of upgrades. In queen size, the step-up frame costs the consumer an additional $29.99. The top-of the-line, queen-size frame costs the consumer an additional $49.99. It’s important to know that sales personnel are rewarded with generous spiffs for selling upgraded frames and are docked for giving away any frame (promotional or otherwise). Furthermore, if you don’t need the free frame, shouldn’t you be entitled to dollars off for not taking an item that comes with the purchase of the bed set especially when they get to keep the free frame? By advertising the frame as "free," the consumer is not entitled to receive a reduction for not taking the free frame because the consumer is not being charged for the free frame!

Macy’s plays other variations of the Frame Game. In one version, you receive a "BONUS BED FRAME (of promotional quality) with minimum $599.00 bed set purchase." Of the six models of bed sets advertised in twin, full, queen and king sizes, no twin size sets, only one full size set, two queen size sets and four king size sets (seven of twenty-four — less than 30%) qualified for the "BONUS BED FRAME."

Another twist of The "FRAME GAME" played by Macy’s works as follows: With your purchase of a new bed set, you may purchase a "1/2 PRICE PREMIUM BED FRAME. OUR BEST FRAMES FROM KNICKERBOCKER, Twin/King-All Size, Reg.$79.00-$119.00 ea. (are on) Sale $39.00-$59.00 ea." It seems like an INCREDIBLE deal!  Ironically, only during this promotion, their "1/2 PRICE PREMIUM BED FRAMES" are priced about the same, as our everyday value pricing for the same frames (without having to purchase any bed set)!
