One of the area’s largest discount bedding chains advertises sale prices "up to 65% off Department Store Regular Mattress Prices." One heavily advertised national 800-mattress purveyor promises similar savings. Fuhgeddaboudit! Inflated Department Store Regular Prices have absolutely no substance! They are manufactured for advertising purposes only. Once you’ve read their disclaimers, you’ll understand how "Regular Prices" work.

Stern’s disclaimer reads "Regular and/or original prices appearing in this advertisement reflect offering prices which may not have resulted in actual sales." Macy’s disclaimer reads "SAVINGS ARE NOT BASED ON ACTUAL SALES BY MACY’S." For example, Macy’s advertises a queen size mattress set comparable to one advertised nearly every week, at $629.00, by one of the area’s largest discount bedding chains. This bed set appears in Macy’s advertisement with a regularly offered-at price of $1,399.00. After 50% off, the price drops to $699.00. After another 10% off, the price drops to $629.00. Finally, after bonus dollars off, the bed set can be purchased for $599.00 ($599.00, amounts to 57% off their own Regular Price)
.
Anyone who ACTUALLY PURCHASED this set at the department store’s regular price has qualified to have his or her picture displayed in the dictionary  next to the word nincompoop!
